Creatively framing a picture!

Writer's picture: AdminAdmin

This is a painting I did last year called "Peaceful Hide Away". It's an oil on canvas but rather than putting a traditional frame on this one I wanted to do something more creative. I wanted it to float above whatever I mounted it on but more than that I wanted to extend the painting off of the canvas. I came up with the idea of doing a diamond shaped frame and adding a background board that I could extend the painting on to.

This is what I came up with. The whole framed piece of art is 39 inches top to bottom and 70 inches side to side. It is framed with old barn wood.

Here is a photo of it from the side so you can see how the inner painting floats above the painted background on the board.

Figuring out the angles and cutting these boards is some what of a challenge. I have a work table that I built so what I ended up doing is drawing it out to scale on a piece of paper to see what measurements would work as well as what would look good. After I figured it out on paper I drew it out on my work table so I could lay the boards directly on it and figure out the angles with some of my tools. This can be kind of difficult and time consuming but it is definitely worth it and it looks great hanging in my studio as a show piece until someone purchases it. I'm putting a price of $2500 on this original art piece. This will look great in someones cabin home or any home for that matter. Prints can also be purchased of the inner painting at this link.
